Making a Home Budget and Monitoring Your Finances
A week flies by and you are still wondering where your money went. You then proceed to mentally list all the items you bought for your household and make rough estimates of your purchases. It seems everything is accounted for, and it appears to you that most, if not all, of those things were necessary. But you wish there were some cash left over from your expenditures. How can you make the most out of your home finances?
Face it, you cannot go on keeping all those figures and ideas in your head and just buy what you need as you go. You have to spend some time to sit down and write up a feasible goal and budget. This will not take hours. You can even complete your strategy in about 30 minutes, especially if you know what you want and are determined to make the most of your funds.
First, enumerate all the expenditures, preferably on a table or spreadsheet. Number one on the list would be food, of course. Don’t forget petrol costs, maintenance fees, and monthly bills, as well as mortgages or debt payments. Assign the amount of money you spend for each of them and calculate the total.
In another sheet, write down your income. This may come from different sources, like pension, salary, child support or gains from a revenue-generating venture (e.g. a business or the lease of property). Sum these up and compare it with that under expenses. The difference of these two quantities can serve as your basis in making adjustments in your spending. Review the first tabulation and evaluate which items you can do away with, purchase in smaller amounts or less frequently. The key here is to live within your means and do what you can to avoid acquiring debts.
This process does not stop there. You need to monitor your cash flow, especially those that are going out of your pocket. Keep receipts, bank statements, and bills organised in folders or envelopes for easy reference. Continue to list your expenses and income and make comparisons on a monthly basis. Doing this will help you stay on the right track.
